The seeds of the Peace Appeal Foundation can be traced to the work of a group of Nobel Peace Laureates and individuals in the late 1990's who helped launch the United Nations International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Nonviolence. In 1997, all 27 living Nobel Peace Laureates issued an appeal to the Heads of State of all member countries of the United Nations, known as the Appeal of the Nobel Peace Laureates for the Children of the World.   The Appeal was one of the formative initiatives leading to the declaration by the United Nation's General Assembly of the International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non Violence for the Children of the World beginning in 2001.

Inspired by the ideals of the Appeal and the UN Declarations, a core group of Nobel Peace Laureates and individuals formally launched the Appeal of the Nobel Peace Laureates Foundation in 2001 with the goal of pursuing innovative peace education programs in support of peace building and conflict resolution globally.

While those ideals continue to be central to our vision, our mission and work have evolved substantially.  In 2005 we renamed ourselves the Peace Appeal Foundation.  Today our work focuses on intensive support of peace processes globally, and on the development of innovative methodologies, tools and educational materials and programs in support of our peace and conflict resolution efforts.   In our work we leverage the extensive experience, skills and knowledge of our founders, advisors and partners with the goal of bringing a more comprehe-nsive and multi-faceted approach to building peace globally.
